Scientist is one of the most feared and fun jobs on station. Being a scientist means you can either make a buttload of delicious weapons, tools and gadgets through research, breed colorful slimes, make delicious fun-packing bombs, or experiment with time and space themselves. As it is predictable with the station, most scientists are not satisfied with just blowing up their testing area and frequently go and spread their flavor of fun throughout the station. This is of course a really bad idea, often resulting in jobbans - but then again, ''delicious bombs''.

Houses the destructive analyzer. You put stuff in it, to numbers go up. The higher the numbers, the more stuff you can produce with the protolathe and circuit imprinter.

With the right research levels, you can construct almost any machine on the station. You can also research upgraded parts to improve existing machines. Remember to sync the database with the network, so the [[roboticist]]s can benefit from your discoveries!

Very rarely, a station can start with a xenomorph egg in containment in this pen. This isn't announced when this happens, so use this information as you will. Just know your pet xenomorph idea may get the station killed should it go wrong.

This lab specializes in the research of bluespace and teleportation. Provided is a telepad, a console and several GPS devices for you to engage in <s>grand theft</s> research!
Often a subsection of the Xenobiology lab, Cytology is concerned with vat-growing new creatures and organisms from simple cell samples taken from throughout the station and other environments. Growth of these cell cultures has to be maintained by providing the right mixtures of protein and other unique chemicals depending on the desired organism. Creation of unique creatures other than common ones is possible given enough effort and time searching for the right cell samples.

==A Terrorist is you!==
At any given moment, a scientist out there is a traitor. When half the station vanishes off the face of the map, well, you know who it was. It is recommended that you use your traitor points on things to conceal your identity, as people will want to murder and rape you to death after you set them up the bomb. Or, in the least, get a space suit for the huge void you just made. Research and development currently are useful for terrorism. Grab whatever you can first out of there like laser cannons and stun guns.

This is of course a really bad idea, often resulting in jobbans - but then again, delicious bombs.

Bare minimum requirements: Do R&D if nobody else is.
Basic skills: Upgrade machines around the station. Do your job without blowing up the department.
Advanced skills: Do Xenobiology before the Captain calls the shuttle. Make bombs and get your teeth kicked in by security.

Research Division
A common Research Division

The Laboratories

Scientist as a job is unique, as it gives you a lot of small sub-departments to go and play with. Below are some basic descriptions of each section of the Science department available. Further details and guides on each section can be accessed with the header hyperlinks.

Research & Development

Houses the Research and Development console, the science department protolathe, the science department circuit imprinter, and the destructive analyzer. The R&D console is where you research specific tech nodes, which unlock new items, which can be printed out by the various department protolathes and circuit imprinters distributed around the station. The science department protolathe prints out machine parts which can be used to upgrade various pieces of machinery, as well as for printing experimental equipment accessible only to scientists. The Destructive Analyzer is now mostly obsolete, only being used to unlock the "Illegal Technology" and "Alien Surgery" tech nodes through analyzing Syndicate or Abductor technology.

Ordnance

This lab focuses on exploring the possibilities of plasma gas, typically always in the form of massive explosions. Provided to you is the Ordnance test chamber, where you can safely test your creations.

While bomb making is reasonably straightforward, it only takes one mistake for the entire room to become flooded with plasma or superheated carbon dioxide. Be patient and cautious.

Bombs have practical uses as mining charges or use in completing research experiments and the refining of raw anomaly cores, though they are mainly sought after by traitors wanting to take out valuable station equipment and cause havoc.

Part of this job also involves hunting down anomalies that have a chance to spawn aboard the station. These are almost always destructive in some way and have to be stopped by someone before they activate an even more destructive secondary effect after roughly a minute and a half. If an anomaly appears, scan it with an analyzer and then ping the frequency it gives you with a remote signaling device. This will disable the anomaly and leave behind it's core which can be used in developing unique anomaly core powered equipment.

Xenobiology

The primary purpose of this lab is research on the breeding of slimes, the extracts of which have a variety of fun effects, by feeding them large numbers of monkeys.

It also contains a pen capable of safely housing xenomorphs, in case the miners manage to locate a live facehugger. Obviously, breeding alien killing machines on the station can only end well. Very rarely, a station can start with a xenomorph egg in containment in this pen. This isn't announced when this happens, so use this information as you will. Just know your pet xenomorph idea may get the station killed should it go wrong.

Cytology

Often a subsection of the Xenobiology lab, Cytology is concerned with vat-growing new creatures and organisms from simple cell samples taken from throughout the station and other environments. Growth of these cell cultures has to be maintained by providing the right mixtures of protein and other unique chemicals depending on the desired organism. Creation of unique creatures other than common ones is possible given enough effort and time searching for the right cell samples.

Circuits

A computer lab housing tools and specialized circuit printers for creating custom programed computers, handheld tools, servers, and other devices. Individual functional and logical components are combined into a single integrated circuit, which is then inserted into a shell of choice.

The functions and ways of using circuits are varied and it is up to the individual's time and creativity to produce circuits of their own design!

The brain-computer-interface (BCI) implanter pod is also housed here for installing circuits into people's heads which can be controlled hands free.

Testing Lab

A general purpose lab that goes mostly unused. It features a firing range and can be converted into a backup lab when one of the other labs inevitably blows up. This lab often houses the E.X.P.E.R.I-MENTOR, AKA that machine that drives R&D crazy by constantly setting off the fire alarm in their lab.

Tips

  • Hey! Listen! Unless you're an antagonist, DO NOT use the bombs on the main station without a VERY good reason. You'll run the risk of being banned otherwise. Refer to the rules.
  • Change the frequency of the remote signalling devices so that other scientists or saboteurs don't set off your explosives themselves.

Questionable Ethics

Oh my science! You're an antagonist with a lot of very expensive research equipment on your hands. It would be a shame if you happened to use it all for malicious deeds...

You can leverage most of the science department's research efforts to empower yourself. Making high yield explosives in Ordnance is an obvious choice, but products from xenobio have a wide range of beneficial and harmful effects that you can use to keep yourself healthy and well armed. Cytology can be used to create dangerous creatures, and with a sentience potion from xenobiology can be made into loyal minions.
